Families, Illness, & Collaborative Health Care

 Doctoral Fellowship

The University of Chicago affiliated Chicago Center for Family Health and MacNeal Health Network offers a one-year full-time fellowship beginning September 2003.  The Chicago Center for Family Health, co-directed by John Rolland, M.D. and Froma Walsh, Ph.D. provides state-of-the-art post-graduate training in family therapy and family systems-based health care in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of specialists (www.ccfhchicago.org).  Fellows have both primary and secondary clinical placements.  The primary placement is with the MacNeal Hospital Family Practice Residency, also affiliated with the University of Chicago. MacNeal has a longstanding reputation of supporting family and psychosocial aspects of health care within a collaborative framework.  Partnering institutions for placement include: the Division of Integrative Medicine and the Center for Compassion in Healthcare at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare, and Gilda’s Club of Chicago.  Fellows have learning access to other programs at the University of Chicago, such as the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics.  The clinical experience, based at MacNeal both in Family Practice and in collaboration with various medical specialty services, emphasizes work with families with a member who has a chronic or life-threatening illness or disability using family, couples, group/multi-family group and individual modalities. The Chicago Center for Family Health provides courses and individual and group supervision.  Responsibilities include participation in multidisciplinary teaching conferences, teaching residents and medical students about the integration of family systems approaches in a variety of health care settings, and collaboration with healthcare providers. Candidates will develop or join an ongoing clinical research project related to families and health care.

Appropriate candidates include both post-doctoral mental health professionals and Ph.D. candidates enrolled in doctoral programs in family therapy who seek to satisfy their internship requirement.  Applicants should have a strong career development interest in the integration of family systems approaches in health care.

Salaries and benefits are competitive with other fellowships nationally.  Inquiries can be made by phone or e-mail (see below).  Interested applicants should send their materials by February 1st, 2003.  To apply, please send your Curriculum Vitae, three letters of reference, Academic transcript, GRE scores, and a cover letter explaining your interest in the fellowship to:
