Health Psychology
Applications are invited for a
24-month postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Health Psychology at Brooke Army
Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas with the position beginning in October,
2002. The fellowship is designed to prepare the post-doctoral level trainee to
assume the professional responsibilities of a clinical health psychologist. The
initial year is focused on the development of skills needed to provide primary
through tertiary preventive psychological services for primary care medical clinics. These include:
Conduction of
supervised diagnostic and psychological assessment of adult and elderly
patients within primary care medical clinic.
Delivery of collaborative care with primary care physician or
physician extender. Establish consultation and liaison skills
for patients receiving inpatient medical care.
Provision of education for
disease prevention designed to promote healthy life styles and reduce risk
factors (e.g. weight / stress management, tobacco cessation). Provide disease management therapy groups
for disorders such as
COPD, diabetes, or chronic pain. Treatment outcome research and medical
cost-offset studies to support the effectiveness of psychological interventions
within the primary care environment.
Teaching and training responsibilities for pre-doctoral residents,
practicum students, treatment technicians, and para-professionals.
The second year of the fellowship is
developed to address the fellow’s
particular area(s) of interest within
clinical health psychology. In
addition, the fellow is expected to
support the specialty interest(s) with original research and program design /
evaluation. To better prepare for responsibilities associated with the hospital-based
or outpatient treatment practice of clinical health psychology, the second year
fellow also provides supervision and mentoring consistent with licensure
status.
Training opportunities: The fellow
will receive individualized training and supervision throughout both years as
well as opportunities for attending lectures, conferences and ongoing seminars.
The salary is $30,597.00 for the initial year and $31,617 for the second
year plus excellent benefits.
The fellowship is available to all doctoral
trained psychologists who have completed an APA accredited doctoral program
with pre-doctoral internship/ residency and maintain US citizenship.
Experiences with behavioral medicine, biofeedback, hypnosis, adult and
geropsychological assessment, empirically-supported brief psychotherapies,
program evaluation, or treatment outcome research are preferred.
